Joseph G. Maloney On January 7,
1925 Joseph G. Maloney was born to George Maloney and
Julia Cooney. He became the second of seven children.
From 1943-1945 he served in World War II. Stationed in
Europe and Africa as a marksman in the infantry and as a
military policeman. By age nineteen he had been awarded
the Purple Heart with an Oak Cluster, followed by the
Bronze Star with an Oak Cluster, Good Conduct Medal,
Distinguished Unit Badge, European African Middle East
Campaign, and four Bronze Stars.
On November 25, 1950 Joe married Theresa Lardieri. Over
fourteen years they had eight children.
From 1946-1980 Joe Maloney worked as an asbestos worker
and joined Local #3 in Cleveland, Ohio. Starting in 1967
for about two years he was the recording secretary for
the union and served on the Executive Board four
different times.
In February 1978, Joe had an X-Ray and pulmonary exam.
It showed he had Mesothelioma.
After two years Joseph G. Maloney died on August 7,
1980. He was 55 years old.
George Donald Maloney
George Donald Maloney was born on
April 21, 1933 to Julia and George Maloney. Shortly
after leaving high school, George enlisted in the Navy.
Upon returning home, he joined his brother working with
the Asbestos Worker’s Local 3.
George married Mary C. Kilbane on
November 3, 1956 at St. Colman’s Church in Cleveland,
Ohio. Over 23 years they had four children.
On February 2, 1979, George was
diagnosed with Mesothelioma, and died on July 26, 1976
at the age of 46.
George never had the opportunity to
meet his grandchildren.
Hillary A. Markis
Hillary A. Markis was born on
October 31, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio to Kornel and Irene
Markis, the second of what would become a family of five
children.
Hillary went to both Catholic and
Public schools, graduating from Cleveland Heights High
in 1965. On May 25, 1968, Hillary married her high
school sweetheart, Donald Perrotti. Their first two
children, Don and Nicole, were born in Cleveland. In
the mid- 1970’s, after moving to Phoenix, Hillary and
Don’s third child, Matthew was born.
One of Hillary’s greatest pleasures
in life came from being involved in her children’s
activities and watching them become independent young
adults. She spent many fulfilling hours at their sports
activities, cheering them on. She was always proud of
their accomplishments. Her door was always open to her
children’s many friends and she enjoyed the
relationships they all shared.
In 1995, at the age of 48, Hillary
was diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma. She bravely
fought the disease over a period of six years, but lost
her battle against Mesothelioma on May 23, 2001.
During her struggle with
Mesothelioma, Hillary cherished the addition to the
family, of her first grandchild, Joshua, born to her
daughter Nicole, and her husband, Dan. Her last year of
life was filled with the added excitement of the
expected birth of Nicole and Dan’s second child, Luke
who arrived the day after her death.
Since Hillary’s death, two more
grandchildren have been born into the Markis/Perrotti
family. Donnie and Bree, Hillary’s son and
daughter-in-law, are the proud parents of Madison Rae
and Nicole and Dan, have had their third child, Abigail.
